Videos and QR Codes in the Library

YouTube is widely used by our students starting in elementary. Creating a channel for your library can be a great way to promote events, book talks and book trailers with students. I noticed many of the videos uploaded on these channels were created by students. Once again this can be an engaging way to promote our library services.

Book Talk: "Holes" by Louis Sachar

Synopsis from Publisher:

Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes.

It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.

About our book talk:

A new initiative this year was to promote library books by having students do book talks. I was surprised by the turnout I had of students who wanted to create a video. Kattia and Mariana were the first students to pilot this endeavor with me. After many takes due to giggles and forgetting what they wanted to say, their book talk was a big hit! Our library coordinator was so impressed that she sent the public relations department to remake the book talk with them to promote it within our district. Overall animoto was very easily to use. To create this book talk we used a green screen and an iPad. I then downloaded the video to my laptop and added the video to animoto. After playing around with some of the backgrounds and music my video was ready to be produced. This was my first time creating a QR code and it was very simple. I think I can use this to make a bulletin board of QR codes for all the book talks that my students make. I can also embed the QR codes in my library webpage. Here is the QR code for the original book talk:

  1. I loved this blog post. It is interesting and engaging! It is great that you are able to embed videos directly into your blog. I am sad that the blog site I used doesn't allow for that unless I upgrade. :( I also really enjoyed your book trailer for Holes. Great job!

  2. Having your students do book talks is an excellent idea. I loved Kattia and Mariana's video--they were great! The video was engaging and interesting. I can see it as a great way to re-introduce older books to our students.
